2 Valuable Lessons I Learned Running Today

Good afternoon Beautiful,
I’m going to start off this post in somewhat of a negative way. I’m really sad that this long weekend is almost over. It was such a crazy, busy, amazingly fun long weekend. But it’s back to the grind tomorrow, but at least it’s a short week!
So… I know that in my last post I had made note that there was no way I was not working out yesterday because of how much I’ve ate/drank this weekend. Guess what? I didn’t go to the gym yesterday. So pathetic… but it is what it is. Instead of the gym, I did hit up Costco, Loblaws and then went to Clarkson (yes, that’s a town…) for a BBQ with some friends.  The BBQ was pretty fun. We had steak and corn on the cob, and it was fun to catch up with friends that we hardly see any more since they moved to Clarkson. I drank skinny girl mojito’s all night, which are paleo, and dinner was completely paleo (steak, corn on the cob, tomatoes) so it wasn’t TOO awful.
Skinny Mojitos anyone?

I woke up this morning and I was looking at my BBM updates on my Blackberry, and a friend of mine had changed her status at 7:56 a.m. and it said “workout time! Early bird gets the worm!”. The moment I read that, I wiped the makeup from underneath my eyes (side note: I usually wash my face before bed, but last time I was tired and/or a bit drunk so it didn’t happen), changed into some running clothes that stank because I hadn’t done laundry, chugged a glass of water and went out the door planning on running for a good 45 minutes, which for me is about 7.5km. Well, I got outside and realized how hot it already was at 10a.m., and instantly regretted not bring water nor my water belt. Not a huge deal I thought, I’ve ran this tons of times with no water, and it’s only 45 minutes, it will be over before I even know it.
So I start running down Lakeshore going west and I don’t think I ran for even 10 minutes before my stomach started turning and my mouth was seriously drying out and I needed a walk break. I realize that when I was in my peak, training for my half-marathon, I could go out and run for 45 minutes straight without even needing a walk break, but not today. So during this run I learned 2 valuable lessons.
  1. Always eat breakfast before you go out for a run (for the optimal breakfast, see my “Meat & Nuts Breakfast) post.
  2. When it’s hot out, bring water.
Ok, so on paper (or on a screen) these seem like common sense, and well, I guess it is common sense. But I was so motivated in that moment that if I had to wait to eat breakfast and let it digest, I probably wouldn’t have gone outside for a run, let’s be honest. Needless to say, I did not make it to 7.5km in 45 minutes and I did indeed walk a lot, but I did get to enjoy the beautiful weather, I got to run/exercise with a lot of beautiful people who were on the trails with me, and I burned some of the calories I consumed over the course of this weekend.
So I came home, all sweaty, and had kind of an “aha” moment. I realized that I actually do not want to train for another half-marathon during the summer. In fact, I don’t want to do long distance running anymore. I did it the first time because I was so pumped up to have this crazy goal in mind, I had the plan in front of me and I just took it run by run. But now that I have 1 half-marathon under my belt, I really don’t have a desire to train like that again for something I don’t actually enjoy doing. When I first came to this conclusion, I felt kind of bad. Almost like I was letting people down. But then I realized, who the heck would I be letting down? Who is actually going to care that I don’t do a second half-marathon besides myself? And I don’t want to dread going out to do something 4x/week for another 16 weeks. So I’ve decided I’m still going to continue to run, but I’m going to run a maximum of 10km when I do (minimum of 6km).
It kind of feels like a huge relief… but without running so much, I really need to make sure my diet is totally in check, and I need to figure out where I will be burning the calories elsewhere.
Then I also realized, I had got C to promise to go to the gym with me today. Perfect! I thought about what I want to do, and how I had done Kettlebells one other time before, but I really enjoyed the workout. So when we got to the gym, C and I put up shop by the dual cable-cross machine and I brought over some kettlebells to do in between sets on the cable-cross.
My workout was kind of scattered all over the place, but from what I remember, it went something like this:
3 sets of 10 on the cable cross – chest fly
In between sets, I did sets of 20 kettlebell swings with a 30lbs kettlebell (I could have done more weight, note for next time)
3 sets of 10 on the cable cross – back fly
In between sets I did 20 one-handed kettlebell swings with a 15lbs kettle bell (again, could have done more weight)
2 sets of 10 bicep curls with 15lbs dumbbells
2 sets of 12  shoulder press with the 15lbs kettlebell
It was a short workout, C doesn’t want to overdo it on himself, so it when I go with him it’s usually a little under an hour – not too bad since I had already spent 45 minutes today running (and walking.. boo).
When I go to the gym that we went to (The GoodLife Fitness located in Liberty Village!) I get really excited because I know I get to visit the Starbucks located underneath for my favourite summer drink…

An unsweetened iced green tea! It’s so delicious and it’s so refreshing.  Also, after every resistance training workout I always have a protein shake. You can see it in the photo above. I got new protein and it’s delicious, it’s vanilla flavoured. On my run, I was actually thinking about a protein shake and how I could spice them up. I remember in college (I studied Fitness & Health Promotion) I used VeggieGreens. They taste pretty awful unless it’s mixed with something, but it’s packed full of vitamins and minerals, basically it’s powdered vegetables. I’m wondering if I put some in with my new vanilla protein powder if it’d taste awful, or if the vanilla would actually make it bearable. Food for thought I suppose.
This week I really want to work out every day. I need to in order for me to help achieve my goals, and so I have some good stuff to blog about to you!
My current goal is to just look so healthy and toned for my work’s Awards Gala that is hosted every year in August. It’s about 3 months away from now so I think I’m on the right track, and it’d be very attainable as long as I’m really good with my diet and my workouts. I will keep you posted... obviously! J
Stay sweet.
PS - does anyone in the Toronto area know a store/shop that carries really cute little black dresses? Every year at the awards gala I always wear colour, and I'm thinking about going black this year for the first time - I need to blow everyone away with a great dress! Comment and let me know if you have any ideas! I'm thinking strapless with a sweatheart neckline...

Thank you for commenting! I love hearing from you! I always comment back so make sure to drop by after! :) xoxo
